THE PLAN

Now beginning with the newspaper so I do need to plan how it will look. This is what my front cover structure will look like:
and my inside page like this:

I'm thinking of having my headlines simple and bold. The main headline:
GANG STEAL STORE TROLLEYS From reading the papers day to day I've picked up on their puns and alliteration which makes a particular headline catchy. 'Steal store..' Another choice for my smaller headlines on the side I have photos of a caving event that I could say that happened as an act of charity. The title could be something like: CAVING CHARITY ACT
I'm starting on my paper and will just plough through it and make changes as I go along. So far I've started on actually placing the caving photo for the front page which goes against what I've said about moral panic and negativity in papers; however I believe caving is an unusual day to day activity so I've decided to change it to this.
So far I have titled my paper as THE SOUTHERN NEWS in Britannia Bold for a simple yet bold look. The colour I've based it on is a kind of murky green, light so that you can still see the writing over the top. Going against the conventions of The News but more like the Petersfield Post. It is blank at the moment and I will have much more little writing in to pack it out, it's just the structure I am working on so far. I like this kind of green, it targets a more older audience as well judging by the kind of font I have used. The front picture I have used is colourful and appears positive because of the people smiling in it. 2011 Okay it's after Christmas now and I've taken some more photos of random things like Waterlooville precinct or West Quay John Lewis - but not many have people in and am trying to come up with some good stories! I've decided to change my front cover story to one about a a kebab shop shutting down because they blocked sewege in the area. Then i could possibly link this story to how a similar story like another kebab shop down the road had the same issue .. a small photo can be used for the inside story. This is my front page picture now ..

I'm going to write my story out at home in a rough draft and then I'll see how it looks when i write it up onto my inside page, have to plan where things are going I don't want to over load the page. For the side parts I'm going to present local news about the 'caving charity act'. I think for another part I should briefly mention something about sport - so need a photo for that! And lastly a couple of advertisements, on the side and one on the bottom! Originally I'll stick to the Spinnaker Tower probably, and one about the Waterlooville Local Library. I prefer to take photos at places as I go along rather than planning, I've realized this just as it seems easier and harder to find things to take pictures of.

For my advertisement I've taken a photo of a famous book 'Goodnight Mister Tom' - I thought I can perhaps make a small advertisement or offer on the right side of the paper;

Maybe not an advertisement but I'm thinking more of an offer 'Collect 7 tokens from this paper for a week and you can collect this book - free from your local WHsmith'. This would target a younger age for my paper also, attracting a childrens book.

On the subject of books I have also taken some photos of my local library, possibly thinking of either promoting it or informing that it has now re-opened after refurbishment.

IDEAS ...

Ideas ..
Starting on suggestions for my newspaper today, trying to think of titles similar to what I've read before in my local newspaper however not the same. I think something negative for my front cover title would create a more eye-catching story; hopefully gaining an interest from potential readers. The reason I think it'll be much more interesting is because of the Moral Panic we gather from all papers today; for example terrorism and politics.

If a person was to read a front cover about social events like the conflict with Afghanistan then the moral panic would create discussion andopinion; the affect from the word of mouth would involve more of the community.

Another example would be the amount of 'chaos' society receives from the

youth, this often involves drugs, violence and anti-social behaviour in general. From everyday observation from friends and family, this creates more discussion becausethe youth are the most important for the next generation; so if unpleasant events occur then it has a larger affect on society in the future. Balancing these ideas around I've decided to base my main story on the youth.

This would have to be a local event and occur in a place the community can relate to - this can include the type of area involved with places 'kids hang out'; therefore rebel and force an impression on their community. A local citizen lives in in Wecock, (hypothetical situation) and they pop into their nearby store to buy a paper. if the local one had

something involved with where they live then their human interest would attract their attention and would more likely purchase this paper.

These can involve many stories and headlines i have thought of - the following list are main headline ideas:

  • Drug use in kids holiday park

  • 12 year old takes knife to school

  • Arson in school playground

  • Gang steal trolleys off local store

  • Teen killed in drowning

I also have to consider the other aspects like advertising around the frame of a paper and smaller stories inside. These would involve taking a number of photos of local situations.

These are the following ideas I have come up with:

  • Big hit on school production

  • Industrial park expanding

  • Celebration over young Bonus'

  • 'Taxiport' (new taxi service company)

  • Gardening tips/cooking recipes inside ..

  • New 'Red Lounge' opening!

  • Discussions on Harbour closing or new ideas for for Harbour

  • Refurbished library now opened!

  • 2 for 1 on meal

  • £10 off Topshop*

  • Apartments for rent advertisement

  • New seafood market coming to you!

During the next week I will take pictures of these aspects to put onto the border of my newspaper.

Last week I have taken a few photos, however not enough to cover all small stories but I'm working on ideas to where to take them. I have taken a visit to Gunwharf in Portsmouth and thought of an idea to 'promote an offer' of the Spinnaker Tower - I took quite a lot of
photos so I have a lot of choice; this is an example of what I am hoping to present onto my newspaper.

So far I've been to commercial road and spotted my friend working at his fish market and have discovered that it is very popular - so I thought of a story to say how they business is branching outsuccessfully - a positive story. Here is another picture of many I've taken.

Pre-Production : -

Background..
What is newsworthiness? What is worth reading and what isn't? It would be something that would create an impact on the individual reading your story.

A local newspaper would be a coverage of events, interests or business for the nearby community; for example "The News" that cover the Portsmouth area.

The logo they use in this newspaper is a flagship, which shows Portsmouth in its best light because of the navy-base and past victories. In this particular article titled "In your dreams" presents an image of a football stadium, which is often discussed about in a local newspaper in society today; Portsmouth football club.

The News

The audience this newspaper sells for is generally for the 16+ as it involves that particular age group and mostly above. It includes praise for local charities or achievements individuals gain within their daily lives but it also shows that the community can have a voice and control over what could happen in the future. It is often different to national tabloids and more formal papers as I find that the language is much more formal than tabloids; however in comparison to the Guardian - it shows more personality.

An example of this is from their home page website - http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/ - As you can see this segment illustrates colour and choice for different readers. The images are eye-catching and the font is simple and bold; the use of colour emits a sense of personality that will interest the possible reader.

The ABC's of this newspaper is 45, 175 copies per issue sold everyday.

What is human interest?
This can be a story that discusses an individual or a group of people - a reader would want to engage with this particular type of article because they can relate to the story in an emotional way. It can present people's problems, concerns or achievements in a manner that would interest the potential reader as sympathetic or perhaps a sense of belonging.
What is Ethos?
Attitudes, values, ideologies, belief systems; your mindset or culture has an influence on your actions. Within newspapers these can vary among the type of paper you would purchase. But they can express different views and perceptives within telling their stories - The Sun for example is classed as infotainment, and will shout out facts however twist them slightly to give it a more dramatic aspect. E.g "My Life Was Stolen On Facebook". At home we have the local The News paper delivered most days of the week and often I discover that the majority of stories that make the front page is about how people or systems are making an impact of Portsmouth. Linking into Ethos I can see how a local community have similar values and ideologies; football, the rise of talented youth's or latest situations about the NavyBase .. The News.
What is the 'inverted triangle'?
This is a metaphor used by journalists to illustrate the placing of the most important facts first within a text. Common methods used by imagining a triangle upside down - the top part with the most substantial important inforb

I have also learned that on the right side of the paper hold stories on sports, advertisement and/or another story. These layouts can vary however, like on one day they had a larger advertisement stretching down the right with less room for other information. On the bottom of this paper and others I've found that they hold advertisements, on sofa companies or a taxi service etc. Anything that promotes a local company within the area. Stories are bordered with dark blue, their themes colour from their logo also. There font never changes and it is always simply bolded with no patterns of whether they're targeting different audiences or not.

I like how it's laid out, probably because I'm used to reading this paper everyday but it's laid out clearly and I can often out clearly where the pages are e.g. when they put 'page 23.' into italics.
I had noticed some changes throughout some certain important to Portsmouth, for example when the Navy ships were de-commisioned they covered the whole of the paper so there was no adverstisement. This would certainly catch the attention of Portsmouth readers as this concerns their history and Portsmouth tradition. Apart from these aspects the layout is colourful and exciting, this paper attracts a lot of citizens in the community; I have noticed this because I work in a super market and distribute the papers in the mornings, these sell very quickly and we order a lot in too!
